A Meal with Tony: Take Your Hat Off

A nostalgic trip to Jersey, serving up all of your Sorpanos favourites with the back story to boot. Starting which chicken soup for the soul, followed by dishes such as gabagool, ziti, involtini, cannoli, and ricotta and pineapple pie. To finish, as the show did, with onion rings. Sopranos and Italian food lovers unite.

The Purple Onion

The Purple Onion operated for a decade between 1964 and 1974 as a late-night dance and striptease bar located across the road from where Ombra is today on Cuba Street. It was the venue that Wellington's beloved Carmen Rupe first made her mark and the area was generally at the forefront of Wellington's drag scene. Representing this evolution of the wider upper Cuba and Vivian Street area from a red-light district to be avoided, to one of the city's liveliest restaurant spots, The Purple Onion has inspired this year's dish - a pasta dish with onion at its core.
