Bee Happy

Have you wondered how a beehive works, or what impact they have on our everyday lives? Or do you just love honey and want to know more about where it comes from? Then do we have the perfect day out for you. The afternoon will start in the Botanical Gardens where our guest speaker and hive specialist will give an insightful talk about the hives and how they work. After a short stroll down to Huxley’s you will be greeted with a ‘bee-utiful’ cocktail and time for some more Q&A. Lunch will be served by our chef, Adam, who has created a bespoke menu utilising the products and bi-products of the hives. If you are feeling honey inspired there will be a local honey supplier offering tastings and jars for sale to take home, alongside some recipe cards designed by our chef. ‘Buzzing’ with excitement? We sure are, and can not wait to see you there!

Aorihi

Huxley's is located in the Bowen Building opposite Parliament. George Ferguson Bowen, Bowen street’s namesake, was born in Donegal, Ireland and was the fifth Governor of New Zealand. Chef Adam shares the same Irish heritage and was inspired by Bowen's history. Bowen was sympathetic to Māori issues with the crown, and clearly able to see the links between the occupation of his birth land and the colonisation of Māori land. Many early Irish settlers disputed being described as Pākehā and much preferred to be known as Aohiri, or Irish.

So to celebrate the life of George Fergusson Bowen, and all the Aorihi that followed in his footsteps, Huxleys presents a Festival Dish foraged in his honour.

Dish Description: Pork loin, smoked pork belly with Jerusalem artichoke, foraged wātakirihi (watercress), pickled turnip, fermented cabbage and pork bone broth
