Rimutaka Update 2020

Rimutaka Prison Gate to Plate is an annual event as part of Visa WOAP. The event has become a hugely important one that embodies the festival ethos of ‘more than just a meal’.

Due to the impacts of Covid-19, Rimutaka Prison has made the tough decision to postpone one of the most popular Visa Welly On a Plate events, Rimutaka Prison Gate to Plate. Read more from the Department of Corrections about this postponement, and find out how you can support organisations working with prisoners, ex-prisoners and their families and whānau all year round via the links we've included below.

Statement from Department of Corrections:

Rimutaka Prison is taking a break from the annual Visa Wellington On a Plate festival as it has postponed this year’s series of Gate To Plate dinners inside the prison.

“The decision wasn’t an easy one,” says Prison Director, Viv Whelan, "but as local restaurants and cafes are playing catch up to recover their businesses following lockdown we didn’t want to be seen to be taking any business away from them.

“We’ve been doing it for seven years so far and our men and staff absolutely love participating in the event but it's been a tough year for everyone and we need a break.

“The Wellington Culinary Events Trust has been very supportive of our decision as has Martin Bosley, who has mentored our men since the first event in 2013.

“We’re sorry to disappoint our supporters but we’ll back next year stronger than ever, we’re just taking a breather.”

You can support families and whānau of prisoners, and those recently released, through donating to charities such as Pillars, Just Speak or any of the other great organisations listed here.
